Thunderbolt is a small town located about 5 miles southeast of downtown Savannah. There are many docks for Savannah’s shrimping trawlers. The town’s picturesque atmosphere and seafood restaurants draw many visitors.

Dutch Island is a private community nestled in the waterways of the inner coastal rivers. Its connected by road to Isle of Hope. There is one public school; Howard Elementary School. This school houses grades Pre-K through 5, and is one of the highest rated schools in the Savannah Chatham County Public School System. 2 private schools, St. Peter the Apostle School and St. Andrew’s School. St. Peter the Apostle School has grades Pre-K through 8, while St. Andrew’s School has grades Pre-K through 12. St. Andrew’s has also gained a reputation of emphasizing the importance of the arts as well as athletics. This has become a prime reason for young families to seek out homes on Wilmington Island. There are also several preschools located on the island.

In addition to the walking/biking trail on Wilmington Island, those looking for outdoor activities can enjoy the benefits of the Wilmington Island Club, which features a golf course, tennis courts, swimming pools and a Nautilus-equipped fitness center. Tybee Island

Beyond the closer islands, about 20 minutes away from downtown Savannah, is Tybee Island, a charming beachfront community that prides itself on being casual and keeping out big businesses. You won’t find glittering condos or posh high-rise hotels on Tybee — here, the locals pride themselves on keeping things simple. But don’t let that fool you, from the cozy cottage on the marsh to the majestic 2 story beach house overlooking the dunes, the homes here on Tybee Island are all appealing in their own way. The eccentricity that permeates this community is echoed throughout its buildings, both commercial and residential. Tybee Island is home to great restaurants and boutiques, and because of the size of the island many of these are accessible by bicycle or golf cart, although many residents will still need a vehicle for venturing off-island. The solidarity of the residents of Tybee Island have attracted many a permanent visitor, and the available dwellings range from beachfront condos to small bungalows tucked away in the pines.
